I’ve often said of R Zoe that she should stick to styling, as I think thats where her strengths lie, however the collection she has just presented overnight in New york is making me think again. While her designs lack the innovation and ‘style setting’ prowess of high end designers, this collection offers much more accessibility to satisfy to the mainstream commercial market, which she has moved into over the last few years. The collection is wearable, and a far cry from her Yves Saint Laurent meets boho personal style, which she struggled to leave behind in her early collections. Zoe’s penchant for boho wasn’t completely lost but it was good to see floaty maxi dresses were few and far between, instead replaced by the more modern silhouettes of clean lines and structured shapes.
Theres clear evidence here of her learnings and her more developed understanding of who and what she’s designing for, with her US department store buyers, surely happy to buy up big. She’s always known for having a white moment and within this collection, I believe this is when she’s at her best, with the emerging NYFW trend of all white, taking centre stage in this offering…
